Grey’s Anatomy TV show has been a phenomenon. If you only base it on the ratings alone, it is already enough proof that this drama series has penetrated mainstream pop culture. With its well-developed characters, compelling storylines, and a pinch of on-the-set drama, its appeal on audiences worldwide is unprecedented. The strongest trump card of the show is said to be its way of leveraging character’s complexities. The long-winding farrago of surprises, twists and turns of relationship troubles in the show have had everyone glued episode after episode. Grey’s Anatomy has indeed etched an indelible mark on primetime TV. Just like all other TV shows that has reaped majority of viewer-ship and skyrocketing ratings, Grey’s Anatomy TV show has its share of ups and downs. A lot of controversies have been thrown on the show and one of which is its long line of actor who, despite gaining much from the show’s popularity, still opted to leave the set for good. One of the first to leave was Isaiah Washington. The reason behind his character being axed from the show was not entirely a surprise. Because of his involvement in the anti-gay comment controversy that happened during an Awards’ years ago, the show’s ratings dropped dramatically. Complaints were hurled at the actor after apparently making a derogatory comment about co-star, T.R. Knight. It escalated to a point of concern when the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation filed complaints against the actor for the alleged anti-gay slur. ABC did not let the incident pass and rebuked the actor. Although Isaiah Washington already delivered an apology for the controversy he has made, the harm on his and the show’s reputation can not be undone. This then paved the way for his character to be crossed out from the show. Isaiah Washington’s dismissal made a snowball effect on the stability of other actor’s contract to star in Grey’s Anatomy TV show. A few months after the incident, rumors about Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight leaving the show came brewing hot on tabloids. There were speculations about talent fee issues, feud among cast members and fight for the spotlight in the show. However, these rumors were ironed out by producers and directors immediately. Despite the issue being messily depicted on gossip shows and publications, the actors involved signed another deal for succeeding episodes of the show. Just recently, the show has lost another of its most adored characters. Melissa George announced that her stint in the award-winning medical drama is about to go kaput. According to the actress, the reason behind her departure from the show was her personal decision and has nothing to do with a rumored feud with the drama’s actors. Although the decision to move on has already been said and done, critics and entertainment magazines can’t help but speculate about the real reason behind the end of Melissa’s arc in the show. Rumor has it that the decision to leave did not solely come from George. In fact, there have been talks about dismissing her episodes before she announced plans of declining another contract with producers. It was said that the producers thought the Sadie, Melissa’s character, was not interesting enough to keep ratings afloat. Grey’s Anatomy TV show is maintaining that the actress’ departure was the most natural thing to do.

As a former TV news reporter and anchor, I often wonder whether TV news still matters. My first thought is usually “Of course it does.” However, perhaps a better question in this age of social media is “Does TV news matter as much as it once did?” Research suggests it does not.

According to data from Nielsen Media Research, viewership on the three evening network news programs has steadily declined over the past 25 years, falling by more than 1 million viewers each year— translating into millions of dollars in lost annual revenue. The 2009 Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism’s State of the News Media annual report says that local news staffs, already too small to adequately cover their communities, are being cut at unprecedented rates. As a result, this caused local revenues to fall by a surprising 7 percent in an election year—and ratings continue to drop. Only cable news is flourishing. As previous Pew annual reports have shown, new media — including the Internet, blogs, podcasts and video sharing — is rapidly becoming mainstream media. Pew cited one survey stating that the number of Americans who say they found “most of their national and international news” online increased 67 percent in the past four years.

While the growth in online news consumption cut across all age groups, it was fueled by young people. It appears that the limitations of three main channels and a dinner-hour time slot are to blame. Even an unofficial survey that I conducted of my college-bound son’s friends with short attention spans revealed that if they want news, they’d rather obtain it online, without commercials and with the ability to move on when they lose interest. Rick Williams, executive producer at WPVI-ABC TV in Philadelphia, agrees. Williams says that because younger viewers get most of their information from the Web, it is critical to cross-promote news between the TV and Web platforms. That means streaming news events live and carrying breaking stories on the station Web site so that viewers don’t have to wait until the evening broadcasts. To do this, many stations have hired producers who do nothing but create Web content, update stories online, produce video for Web sites and create breaking-news alerts that are sent to subscribers’ cell phones and e-mail. As a result, Williams says that WPVI is probably in better shape than most stations because it has focused attention on viewer habits, and also maintained a loyal audience who has followed the same anchor for more than 30 years. “Our ratings are still strong, but clearly not as strong as back in the day,” says Williams. “Overall TV viewing is down, especially given you can now watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it.” He says that many stations “have all but turned out the lights in their newsrooms and have laid off scads of people” because they can share video and use more canned pieces from other content providers. However, he stresses that TV news, especially local news, is still relevant for many stations around the country, especially regarding weather reporting. Williams says that even though you can click on many Web sites for a quick update, local weather reports remain big drivers for TV news viewers.

Additionally, as lifestyles change and people start their days earlier, morning news programs are also growing. About 40 years ago, viewers only had three channels to choose from. As cable grew, more channels were offered. As the Internet exploded, more videos started popping up on the Web, generating millions of hits and prompting creators to improve quality. Combine this explosion with “friending” on Facebook, “tweeting” on Twitter, blogging, podcasts and “linking” to one another on LinkedIn, and it’s easy to understand why TV news is no longer the gold standard for delivering and receiving information. TV stations are now having the same experience as newsrooms: award-winning journalists and broadcast executives are fleeing TV stations to begin alternative news sites that provide investigative reporting, tap freelance journalists for content and offer long, in-depth pieces that are tough to find in today’s revenue-challenged TV newsrooms.

Media and political consultant Larry Ceisler says that the financial pressure on local news is forcing those operations to air more voiceovers and use fewer reporters. “The fact that reporters are younger and less experienced in their markets is a detriment.” Ceisler says because money is tight, many newsrooms can’t afford to hire experienced reporter and producer staffs who are familiar with the market where they work. Ceisler adds that the quality of reporting has diminished, and he believes that the days when local TV was a PR expert’s most important task is over. “It is always good for the client, when they have an event, to see cameras,” he says, “but cameras are becoming more like props for clients. Bottom line, TV just does not have the impact it once did.” While this may be true, other

PR professionals believe that TV is a convenient and effortless way to stay on top of what’s happening in the world, especially for older people who are not as computer savvy. “When you consider that more people [use] TVs than computers to access news online, [then] the role and continued value of TV news becomes more apparent,” says Lori Neuman, communications manager for NRG Energy. She adds that TV news speaks to and reaches all audiences. It’s still an important vehicle to get your message out, Neuman says.

Former major market television news reporter turned media and crisis consultant Rick Amme believes TV news is actually more relevant than it’s ever been and credits You Tube, the popular video sharing website frequented by users from around the world who upload and share video clips. Amme cites a Fortune 100 client who just a few years ago told him she was much more concerned about print media because it could be replicated and circulated much more easily than broadcast media. In Amme’s opinion, You Tube has changed that entirely. “TV news has now become potential source material for good or bad news and the viral videos can have a more powerful visceral impact on many different audiences.”

As for my own opinion following two decades as a television news reporter and anchor, I also believe TV news, especially local news, will remain relevant to people who want to know what’s happening in their own backyard. Despite the steady decline of viewers, Pew also reports approximately two-thirds of Americans say they still get their news from their local television stations. Although newsrooms across the country are cutting salaries, staff and merging operations to cut costs, many continue adding additional newscasts in an effort to remain profitable as news programming can account for nearly half of a station’s overall revenue.

Like any good product, TV news must strive to remain relevant by continuing to beef up web presence and attract younger viewers. But I also believe TV news must consistently differentiate itself by doing what it does best which is broadcasting world events and Live breaking news in a way that only television cameras can capture.

90210 TV show is one of the latest teen dramas that CW has produced following the internet and teen market success of Gossip Girl. This teenage flick is not an entirely new enterprise since there was already a show using the same concept and formula in the 90’s—Beverly Hills 90210. However, unlike the recent CW show, its predecessor has had massive success among teenage viewers of its era. Whether it is a question of timing and the considerable changes in the taste of today’s teen market, one thing question lingers: Will 90210 be able to stand against its predecessor’s fame?Having such a reputable show towing behind can indeed affect a series’ standings. Moreover, the backlash of such a situation could be twofold—1. The show’s predecessor’s popularity could act as a scaffold that would propel the 90210 TV show into greater heights; and 2. the show could just remain as a shadow of Beverly Hills 90210’s flight to success. To further expound on this, let us try to compare the former and the recent 90210 shows. Beverly Hills 90210The story of this 90’s hit teen series revolved around the adventures and growing up tales of twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh after they moved in to Beverly Hills from a small town in Minnesota. Even using this time’s standards, the show can still be considered as risqué in content, dealing with delicate teenage issues such as sex, drug abuse, cheating, teenage pregnancy and even a bit of incest in the mix. At the time, it created a huge issue, even opening the Pandora ’s box about censorship on TV and matters pertaining to teenage issues. Beverly Hills 90210 never escaped tabloids and gossip pages, as well. There were also rumors about the fuming feud between cast members Shannen Doherty and Jeanie Garth. If the new millennium saw Hollywood young actresses with wild and destructive streaks such as Nicole Ritchie and Paris Hilton, the 90’s had its own version in the person of Shannen Doherty, one of 90210’s biggest leads. The drama that happened offset became a springboard for show’s ratings to soar even higher. Beverly Hills 90210 peaked at 20 million viewers and during its last season on air, it fared an average of 10 million viewers. Ratings: At its peak, the show averaged about 20 million viewers. It was cancelled in its 10th season, in which it averaged about 10 million viewers.90210 TV ShowJust like its predecessor, 90210 centers on the life and adventures of siblings Annie and Dixon who moved from Kansas to Beverly Hills. The characters are still faced with many high school trials and dilemmas. The same formula is still used—drugs, teenage drinking, love entanglements, and cheating parents. The show also had some of the old casts, Jeanie Garth and Shannen Doherty guest in the show. Jeanie Garth, on the other hand, played a mainstay character in the show. Anorexic rumors about the show’s main actresses Shenae Grimes and Jessica Stroup started to spread like wildfire as viewers, cast, and even producers of the show noticed the stars’ rail-thin appearances. The show’s premier boasted of 4.7 million viewers, thanks to heavy promotion and advertisement for the series. It’s dubbed as the highest premier viewer rating for any CW drama. However, the show’s magic soon faded as ratings dropped to only 3 million viewers per episode. The verdictBased on recent TV ratings and reviews, the recent teenage spin off seems to be tipping way below the popularity and success of Aaron Spelling’s multimillion dollar teen franchise of the 90’s. Although, 90210 TV show’s producers and scriptwriters have been firm in their stand that they intend to veer away from anything that would make the recent show a spin off of its predecessor, the effort still seemed futile. Moreover, the teen drama failed to offer something that BH 90210 has already offered its viewers in its reign. Some TV critics are even saying that that the former is arguably better than the recent 90210 TV show based on viewer’s response, storyline, character development, and the show’s ability to influence pop culture.
