This arrangement gives the program provider the edge to ensure that quality pictures are broadcasted and delivered to their subscribers and viewers. A contractual agreement is entered by the providers and the distributors, and one main issue that’s addressed is what the distributors can and cannot do with the Providers signal. For instance, a provider can send out a program in 720p and the cable provider cannot change it to 480i in order to save bandwidth. This is to ensure that the quality of picture transmitted is truly broadcasted to their subscribers and viewers. Some reputable DBS provider delivers its broadcasts and programming precompressed and makes strict demand on what other agents programming company’s is multiplexed (bandwidth economics) with onto the same channel. For instance Robert Zitter, HBO’s chief technical officer in an interview says “We do a contractual relationship with all of our distributors, and one of the items that’s addressed in there is what they can and cannot do with our signal,”. He further says that they place a high priority on their video broadcast and thus ensures that no other programming content is multiplexed with onto the same channel with their content (no sports channels, animated content or other high-bit-rate-demand content). We know that more demand is made these days on the quality of pictures delivered HI-DEF signal technologies, considering the quantum leap in both bandwidth and video compression technologies. This conversely put stress more and more HI-DEF channels with ever-higher bit-rate demands. The result is the increased Internet usage putting more strain on overall cable bandwidth, the horse-trading between broadcasters over bits per second could easily get messier as time goes on until a solution is brought about by another technology breakthrough.Quoting Hugh Brydges, of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, he stated that there is a behind-the-scenes quasi-democracy of bandwidth going on with many cable networks, where major channels get assurances of quality, while certain low-viewership channels aren’t really channels in the classic sense at all.Using a technology called “switched digital video,” these channels are served up to viewers upon request like a video-on-demand movie. When nobody is watching, the channels take up no space at all.

The Broadband’s deployment this millennium and lately this last lap of this decade has increase the penetration rates generated by dial-up Internet-access services that primary markets are consumers whose PCs have 56- or 28.8-kbps modems.Cable subscribers now taking a huge advantage of their cable modem has made the market race for broadband astronomical. According to Forrester Research, only 6% of the U.S.’ online households subscribe to a cable, telephone or wireless service providers’ broadband service. In raw numbers, that totals about 3 million homes.Broadband technology has come to stay with its early debut of making online TV watching a reality and video streaming an enjoyable experience for PC users, the future is definitely laden with better economics for this technology. According to Forrester Research, in 2005, DSL, cable modem and other broadband connections will hit the 35-million mark in the U.S. As at 2007 December it hits over 66 million!According to a May, 2000, report from the marketing research firm Forward Concepts. They predict that such broadband-enabled services as packet voice transmission, e-commerce, videoconferencing, virtual private networks, and gaming will drive demand, particularly in the residential and small office-home office (SOHO) markets. Note this estimates precludes densely populated developing countries like India, Japan and China, worldwide it is estimated to be close to 150 million mark by the end of 2008.It was estimated that out of that 35-million-customer market seen in 2005, cable will account for 60% of the subscribership, with DSL dominating the SOHO and enterprise markets. For companies with fewer than 20 people, DSL penetration rates could near 50% and run as high as 75% in businesses with up to 100 people, according to Forward Concepts.Broadband today is a dream come true for internet users, for it is a technology that have made possible the seamless integration of the broadcast and transmission of all forms of data especially heavy graphics such as video streaming without loss of picture quality compare to other internet access medium.

Digital TV transmission is not transmitted in the traditional fashion of bit rates rather an advanced form of statistical multiplexing is adopted maximize the broadband. Broadband technology has advanced broadcasters and satellite providers in art of digital TV broadcast. It has also allowed broadcasters to allocate bandwidth dynamically to various programs based on the requirements of each program; this is meant to efficiently optimize the use of available bandwidth at every point in time. For example, an High Definition broadcast on of a track-and-field event would have fast-paced movement requiring a lot of extra bits, therefore more movement there is on screen, the more pixels need to update in each frame, so the less efficient the compression of the video stream becomes. But a newscast on same channel, with largely static talking heads, requires a lower bit rate for the same perceived quality. So the statistical multiplexer will shift a greater portion of the bits running down the broadcast pipe to a sporting event with many fast-paced movement than a talk show with less movements. The above is a typical scenario in the broadcast realm, where only a small number of programs are running on each channel. Now with Cable and satellite services transmitting hundreds of channels at a time with mixture of fast paced programs such as sports and less fast paced programs like news and talk shows, broadband users will experience tilling in some transmissions where more pixels are employed to update fast paced transmissions – and the bandwidth is not properly multiplexed to update the pixels.Tilling often occurs when there is over compression of programs in the transmission of the multiple channels in a bandwidth pipe. Since there no regulatory and monitoring when it comes to compression of HI-DEF content on those services, and in order not over compressed their programs, many cable channels and major networks broker individual contracts with each provider the minimum-quality-of-service for delivery the transmission of their broadcasts.

Many broadcasting networks are now going on the web to widen their fan base giving opportunities for people to watch TV online, at least with their most popular shows. This becomes a good option for a show doing poorly in the ratings making them available online strengthens their ratings; consequently establish a larger fan base as they are watched online. With broadband Technologies improving steadily over the years, TV broadband has become a concept that has erodes the poor quality TV streaming that was associated with watching TV on the web. As Internet connections have become faster, the ability to watch TV online has become much more practically enjoyable.Efforts by satellite channels providers are paying off now as it becomes easier to convert all digital TV broadcasts with less loss of picture quality to online viewing. Current survey shows by a study by The Convergence Consulting Group that there is a steady increase in online viewership from 2005 to 2008.Convergence estimates that 9% of TV viewers had viewed full-episode broadcast/cable/network TV shows in 2007, up from 6% in 2006. It hit 14% in mid 2008 and 23% in 2010. Though with this development many broadcasters are just still using the web as an option to TV viewing in keeping with broadband trend as well a tool to increase and maintain their market. The convention home TV has come to stay but I believe there will be convergence of technologies especially broadband and wireless to make the traditional TV converge seamlessly with online TV viewing. I am among those that theorize that Internet TV will not replace the home TV.Except you have a large LCD screen, it’s simply not as comfortable to watch TV online. The 15″ or 17″ laptops the biggest in the market so far would not replace the latest enormous flat, plasma, HDTV screen, and especially family programs would be hard to watch on many of the smaller computer monitors. The idea of watching clear good quality satellite channels videos on the laptop is a good catch that is fast becoming a norm.I am longer in rush like few years back when I miss my favorite shows, all I have to do is just to click on my TV on PC software which already has pool all these web TVs in a menu driven bar and off I go to view my shows. My catch has been if you can watch TV online with fewer commercials, why sit down to watch regular TV at all?
